‍Justin Trudeau announced his resignation on January 6, 2025 and asked the Governor General to prorogue Parliament until March 24, 2026.

‍In Canada, the political party whose candidates win more seats than any other party, wins the election. The party leader automatically becomes Prime Minister.

‍This allows any party to elect a new party leader and therefore create a new Prime Minister without a national election.

‍Liberal Party members voted on a successor to Justin Trudeau from February 26 to March 9, 2025.

‍Mark Carney, a former governor of the Bank of Canada, a former governor of the Bank of England, and a former CEO of Brookfield Asset Management was elected by Liberal members.

‍Mark Carney, who has never held a seat in the House of Commons and has never been elected, won the ranked-choice voting election with over 85% of the first-preference vote.

‍On April 28, 2025 the Liberal Party won the election. As leader, Mark Carney became Prime Minister. Did something happen?

‍Maybe the new Sheriff is in town?
